BiSC IS ALSO ASSESSING NOISE EXPOSURE
Assesing noise exposure in BiSC At BiSC, in addition to exposure to air pollution during pregnancy, we also study exposure to noise, as together they are the main environmental pollutants in cities and those that most affect health in Europe. Noise is an unwanted sound, and traffic is its most common source. And how do we measure noise exposure? During the visit to the participants' home during the [...]
BiSC WILL ASSESS THE PRESENCE OF “BLACK CARBON” PARTICLES IN THE PLACENTA
Presence of polluting particles in placenta "Black carbon" is a component present in the smoke of the motors of the vehicles that use hydrocarbons as fuel. These are very small particles (with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers) that are produced by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and are suspended in the air we breathe, entering by air into our body. Processing and preservation of the samples in the laboratory
The biological samples of BiSC and its processing! Blood, placenta, cord, saliva, urine, meconium, nails, hair... There are many biological samples that are collected throughout the study, but how are those samples processed and where are saved? Samples collected at the hospital or at home, arrive at the laboratory where they are treated and stored specifically, depending on the type of biological material, the application of the sample [...]
COLLECTING MECONIUM SAMPLES IN BISC PROJECT
We keep collecting new biological samples! The whole set of bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms living in a particular habitat conform what is known as microbiota. We can find microbiota in our environment (in the leaf of a tree, in a volcanic stone, in the Arctic ice...), as well as in our organism (in the skin, in the intestine, in the mouth...). THE LOW-EMISSION ZONE (ZBE) HAS BEEN ACTIVATED – RONDES BARCELONA
The ZBE was activated the past January 2! The Barcelona City Council has activated this January 2, an action plan to reduce air pollution from motor vehicles. The ZBE, is a restricted area of more than 95km2 where vehicles that do not have the DGT environmental badge, cannot drive and can be sanctioned from April 1, 2020. The area that will remain restricted includes the Ronda de Dalt [...]
See you in 2020!
We wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! We are reaching the end of the year 2019, and we would like to thank all the people who are involved in the BiSC project for all their efforts and motivation. We hope that upcoming year we can continue with all the work done until now and that it is like the one that we are ending or better! [...]
One of the volunteers from BiSC at “betevé”!
The testimony of a BiSC volunteer at "betevé"! After more than a year of starting volunteer recruitment for the BiSC project, we are back in the media! In this report we can see the testimony of one of the project volunteers, Roser, throughout the video she explains a little bit the functioning of the project and the different tasks that you must perform when you participate. As many [...]
How can we assess the exposure to air pollutants?
We are measuring the personal exposure to nitrogen dioxide! In the BiSC project a precise evaluation of the main air pollutants to which the participant is exposed is carried out. Among these pollutants we find nitrogen dioxide, which is one of the most related to road traffic. Nitrogen dioxide measuring equipment is small plastic tubes with two caps at their ends (one gray and one white). In the [...]
