Preparations for the third edition of the BiSC Party have started!

Dear BiSC families, the third edition of the BiSC Party is approaching! As you may recall, this was a meeting organized in 2022, with the aim of bringing families closer to science and the project, and also to bring all those mothers, fathers and children who make it possible for BiSC to advance and continue to obtain results for the health of children closer to the team.

As the last party was a great success, we are organizing a third edition for May 17, in the central square of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB): C/ Doctor Aiguader 88, 08003 Barcelona. Once again, the space will offer themed stalls managed by different members of the team, who will be able to answer all your questions about the project, analyzed data, new results… All of this will take place in the same […]

BiSC at the ISEE annual conference in Santiago, Chile

BiSC at the ISEE annual conference in Santiago, Chile

This August, the 36th annual conference of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) was held in Chile, with the main theme being “Addressing challenges in environmental health, justice and development.” Among all the speakers, three researchers presented results related to the BiSC project.

On August 28, one of the project’s main researchers, Jordi Sunyer, spoke. During his presentation, he shared preliminary data on how exposure to air pollution can affect neurodevelopment and be associated with changes in the morphological development of the brain of children considering that this environmental influence can begin before birth, that is, during pregnancy.

Sofía Aguilar’s presentation was about exploring the association between exposure to green spaces during pregnancy and DNA methylation in the placenta. The hypothesis behind her research is that changes in the epigenome of the placenta could be one of the molecular mechanisms underlying the […]

We present preliminary BiSC results at the Health Effects Institute conference

We present preliminary BiSC results at the Health Effects Institute conference

At BiSC we have been working hard for many months refining all the data that we are collecting in the different monitorings. The data collected in the prenatal period is already in a very advanced state and we can start with the first analyzes to assess how various environmental factors, lifestyles and other parameters affect the development of children.

On the one hand, we already have in a very advanced state the models that allow us to quantify the exposure to atmospheric pollutants of the participants during each week of their pregnancy. Based on the data we collected at prenatal visits, the knowledge of your address and thnks to complex statistical models (which take into account variations in time and space) we were able to assign to each of the participants the levels of air pollution for each week of pregnancy.

In […]

We are preparing the BiSC party!

We are preparing the 2022’s BiSC party!

As we always say, the BiSC Project is possible thanks to the participation of more than 1000 volunteers and their families. Without your effort and altruism when sharing information about your pregnancies, health of your children and exposure to pollution, we would not be able to carry out this research study.

That is why it is essential to share all the work we are doing, both in terms of analysing the pregnancy data and the environmental and biological samples, as well as the planning for the next follow-up visits. We want to celebrate together the progress of the study and all that we have achieved so far, which is a lot!

Two years ago we held a first meeting where we were able to create this space for dialogue, answer questions and doubts, and get to know the researchers. The participation was very high but […]

Scientific dissemination on the frame of the BiSC project

Scientific dissemination on the frame of the BiSC project

This spring, researchers of the BiSC project have participated in activities to disseminate the project in schools. Neus Rosell and Pol Jiménez visited Escola Pia-Balmes in Barcelona, to talk to the children about the effects of air pollution on our health. They explained the origins of this type of pollution today (gases and particles from road traffic, maritime traffic, heating – often invisible), its composition, the different instruments with which it is measured, and the multiple organs of the human body that it affects in the short and long term. They also showed that pollution most significantly affects pregnant women (and fetuses), babies, children and the elderly, causing more deaths globally than smoking or infectious diseases such as tuberculosis or malaria. Finally, they wanted to convey that this is an avoidable mortality and that reducing the number of vehicles, improving public […]
