We are preparing the BiSC party!

We are preparing the 2022’s BiSC party!

As we always say, the BiSC Project is possible thanks to the participation of more than 1000 volunteers and their families. Without your effort and altruism when sharing information about your pregnancies, health of your children and exposure to pollution, we would not be able to carry out this research study.

That is why it is essential to share all the work we are doing, both in terms of analysing the pregnancy data and the environmental and biological samples, as well as the planning for the next follow-up visits. We want to celebrate together the progress of the study and all that we have achieved so far, which is a lot!

Two years ago we held a first meeting where we were able to create this space for dialogue, answer questions and doubts, and get to know the researchers. The participation was very high but […]

Getting closer to the BiSC study!

Getting closer to the BiSC study!

The Drs. Julia Zanini and Carla Domínguez, from the obstetrics and gynecology team at the Hospital de Sant Pau and collaborators in the BiSC project, have held several talks in recent months at Barcelona Civic Centers to bring the BISC study in the population.

The Naves and Guinardó civic centers regularly hold science talks open to all the public who may be interested. Talks about the BISC project were very well received! Both with a small audience in person and subsequently viewed in streaming, many questions were generated and great interest arose towards the project.

Thank you all for your interest!

Participate in BiSC in two occasions!

This week we interview one of our volunteers who has been encouraged to participate in the project during her two pregnancies!

What is your concern regarding the impact of environmental pollution in the city where you live?

I certainly wasn’t worried before I got to know the study. As soon as you are interested in the study, you can read information about it on the web and you start to see the effects. The study investigates effects from the gestation of new lives, in the neuronal and cognitive development of the new living being. And this did concern me especially, not only for my son.

What initially motivated you to participate in this study initially?

Researcher and volunteer!

When a researcher of BiSC, is also a volunteer!

First of all, Marta, we appreciate your participation in the BISC project both as a research gynecologist at the Hospital San Joan de Déu and as a volunteer.

1. To start, could you tell us something about yourself? (What have you studied, where were you born and how would you define yourself?)

I have studied Medicine in Madrid where I was born and I moved to Barcelona to do my residency in Gynecology. Fate wanted me to do a residency at HSJD, where my interest in research was born. I was lucky that I was offered the opportunity to collaborate with the BISC project. I consider myself a hard-working, motivated, and curious person and that is why […]

The 1st virtual meeting with BiSC families!

The 1st virtual meeting with BiSC families!

The BiSC project is already 2 years old and we are very happy to be able to have our first meeting even if it is virtual with our project volunteers with whom we have traveled all this time. The main objectives of the meeting are:

  • Encourage interaction between the BiSC professional team and families.
  • Update on the status of the project and the changes we have made to suit the COVID-19 context.
  • Present the first results on air pollution and noise, magnetic resonance imaging (a test performed on a subset of children), and neurodevelopmental tests.
  • Present the results of the MOOD-COVID study, in which […]

A creative way of doing the environmental exposure assessment at home!

The essential involvement of the BiSC volunteers and their creativity!

Gradually, the BiSC project is reactivated, and some of the visits are starting again, such as the 32-week pregnancy environmental visit. Given the circumstances, we had to readjust the way the visit was carried out to be able to keep collecting information on certain air pollutants such as NO2, or other factors such as temperature and humidity.

This week we received a photo of a volunteer who, following the instructions of the technicians, has managed to integrate the NO2 tube and the USB for temperature and humidity in a curious and very original way at home, at the height and proper position.

We left the image, just in case, you want to get ideas!

Thank you […]
