See you in 2020!

We wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

We are reaching the end of the year 2019, and we would like to thank all the people who are involved in the BiSC project for all their efforts and motivation.

We hope that upcoming year we can continue with all the work done until now and that it is like the one that we are ending or better!

One of the volunteers from BiSC at “betevé”!

The testimony of a BiSC volunteer at “betevé”!

After more than a year of starting volunteer recruitment for the BiSC project, we are back in the media!

In this report we can see the testimony of one of the project volunteers, Roser, throughout the video she explains a little bit the functioning of the project and the different tasks that you must perform when you participate.

As many other volunteers explain that, her motivation to participate is her concern for the air that we breathe, and she hopes that with the conclusions “courageous policies can be applied to address a matter of public health.” .

How can we assess the exposure to air pollutants?

We are measuring the personal exposure to nitrogen dioxide!

In the BiSC project a precise evaluation of the main air pollutants to which the participant is exposed is carried out.

Among these pollutants we find nitrogen dioxide, which is one of the most related to road traffic. Nitrogen dioxide measuring equipment is small plastic tubes with two caps at their ends (one gray and one white). In the gray plug, there is a metal mesh impregnated with a reagent that absorbs nitrogen dioxide. To start the measurement, the white cap of the tube is removed and through the process of molecular diffusion, the air circulates from the outside (high concentration of the contaminant) to the inside of the tube (low concentration of the contaminant) where it is absorbed.

Postnatal visit at 6 months of age

We have started with the follow up of the babies at 6 months of age!

During the visit there will be several tests to evaluate the neurodevelopment of the newborns, among which is the Bayley test, and optionally a test that uses the eye-tracking technique. In addition, more information is collected regarding the health card data and a questionnaire about the health of the baby. For the  environmental exposure assessment, babies will also wear a NO2 tube during a week to measure their personal exposure to NO2.

Let’s look back…

The beginnings of the BiSC!

It has been a year since we kicked off with the kick-off meeting. Meeting in which we would expose a project with feet and head, an illusion to help our society, help future members of our world, we should know if pollution can affect our potential beings since pregnancy.

We all had and are excited about the BISC project, now we look back and although we had very ambitious goals we have achieved great things this year.

Among the 3 participating centers Maternitat Clinic Hospital, Sant Joan de Déu Hospital and Sant Pau Hospital we have already recruited a total of 400 pregnant women of which 200 have already given birth. Post-natal Magnetic Resonances have […]

A new incorporation in the steering comitee of BiSC

A new boost to the BiSC steering committee!

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Maria Foraster, an assistant research professor at ISGlobal, has become a new member of the BiSC steering committee.

This committee, which coordinates the scientific and logistical aspects of the BiSC, already had four members: Dr. Payam Dadvand, Dr. Maria Dolores Gomez Roig, Dr. Elisa Llurba Olive, and Prof. Jordi Sunyer. Given the expertise, ambition, and breadth of knowledge of Dr. Foraster, we believe this addition will further boost the progress of the BiSC.

Teamwork, essential for the functioning of the BiSC project

We have reunited with the midwifes from the “ASSIR Esquerra”, who are helping us with the recruitment of the volunteers!

This Wednesday, October 23, 2019, a follow-up meeting on the BiSC project took place at the CAP Manso with the ASSIR Esquerra midwives, who help us in the recruitment of volunteers.

In addition, our fieldworker Berta Miralles has explained in an easy and simple way how the environmental visit to the pregnant woman works, showing us the famous backpack for the assessment of personal exposure to contamination and all the midwives have not hesitated to prove it!

Midwifes from the “ASSIR Esquerra” involved in the BiSC project

To finish, Dr. Giulia Casu, a obstetrician from BCNatal, presented a summary of the project data for recruitment, 32-week and delivery outputs in the three Hospitals where the BiSC […]

The first magnetic resonance of the project BiSC

Today, we have done the first magnetic resonance of the BiSC project!!

This morning at BBRC (Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center) we have done the first magnetic resonance trial, with our first voluntary baby and it has been an enterely success!

The entire BiSC team wishes to thank their parents, to collaborate in this stage of the project and the baby, as it has been a pleasure to have them with us.

We’re really looking forward to seeing the following volunteers!

The BiSC project on the TMB buses and underground!

The BiSC project and the TMB are collaborating!

The “Fundació Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB)” collaborated with the BiSC project. In addition to its dissemination through its social networks, from today and for two week, the TMB foundation will issued a short video on the BiSC project to help with the recruitment of pregnant women. We hope it will be an absolute success!

The BiSC project does not stop growing!

New primary attention centers have incorporated to the BiSC project

Since mid-year, professionals from the centers of Sexual and Reproductive Care (ASSIR) have joined Manso and Numancia as project collaborators. Both centers have as reference the Hospital Clínic Seu Maternitat, collaborator of the project from the beginning.

This new stage is being carried out with great enthusiasm by professionals, who consider “a great opportunity to involve pregnant women in the area of such an investigation” as one of the midwives who works in both centers.

The reception by interested pregnant women is being very satisfactory, especially because of the ease and proximity with which they are presented to participate in the study and the direct relationship with their midwife, without having to travel to other centers to perform the first study visit.

This inclusion means that we […]
